The government is set to issue a new note of Tk 5 denomination.

With different colour than the existing ones in circulation, it is expected to be circulated next week, official sources said. It will have light blue shed in colour.

It will be in circulation simultaneously with the existing Bangladesh Bank and government notes, they added.

"The new note will be issued to remove confusion between the bank note and the government note," said an official, preferring not to be named.

The note of Tk 5 denomination has been made a government currency note since June 5 - before then, it was only a bank note.

Sources said the decision to issue the new note as the existing two notes of the central bank and the government remained same in colour and design, bearing the signature of Senior Secretary of Finance Division Mahbub Ahmed.

At present, the government issues notes and coins of Tk 1, Tk 2 and Tk 5 denominations.
