Govt mulls expansion of Gopalganj BSCIC Park

The government has planned to set up 360 industrial plots in the BSCIC Park of Gopalganj district, which would create nearly 2500 new jobs.

"A total of 250 industrial units would be installed at the BSCIC Park, of which 10 per cent would be reserved for the women entrepreneurs," an official of planning ministry told BSS on Monday.

He said the direct employment of 2500 people in the industrial park would help eliminate poverty in the district.

In this connection, the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has taken a project involving Tk 980 million to expand the Gopalganj Industrial Park.

The project is now awaiting the final approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).

The planning ministry official said potential entrepreneurs and labourers are available in the district.

In addition, export and import would be easier from the industrial park after the completion of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, he added.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 2016.

The main activities of the project are to expand the existing park to 50 acres, development and construction of road and drainage system and installation of power connection.

Earlier, Planning Minister Mustafa Kamal said there are currently some 74 BSCIC estates across the country having 10,338 plots, of which more than 4,100 plots are in operation with industries while the rest are lying idle.

He also said the relevant ministry has been asked to submit a report after an in-depth study and the idle plots would be reallocated to the genuine entrepreneurs.
