Govt mulls heavy industries across country

The government has plans to set up heavy industries across the country and undertook a good number of projects in the last five years.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said this while replying to a question of Begum Salma Islam raised by treasury bench member AKM Jahangir Hossain on her behalf at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday, reports BSS.
The minister said the projects included North-West Fertiliser project, High Capacity Urea Fertiliser Factory on the premises of the Urea Fertiliser Factory Limited and Palash Urea Fertiliser Factory Limited, Clinker/Cement Factory, Shahjalal Fertiliser Project, Bangladesh Steel and Engineer Corporation, Chittagong Dry-dock Limited and agriculture-based industries.
He said Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory would go into production in middle of the next year while Clinker/Cement Factory would be set up within three years.
The work on North-West Fertiliser project would be completed within the next five years, the minister added.
Meanwhile, another UNB report adds: The 15 state-owned sugar mills incurred a total loss of some Tk 5.28 billion in the last fiscal year (FY), 2013-14.
The 15 sugar mills produced 128,268 tonnes of sugar, while five private sugar refinery factories imported 1,940,612 tonnes of raw sugar in the same FY, the minister said, replying to a starred question from Habibur Rahman (Bogra-5).
