Govt takes initiatives to solve textiles sector's problems: Gazi

7 orgs honoured at National Textiles Day 2021 event for Covid-time roles

The government will take initiatives to resolve problems existed in the textiles sector considering the sector's importance for development of the country's economy, said Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi on Saturday in the city.

"We would sit together including the ministry of commerce, ministry of finance and other stakeholders to help resolve the problems in the textiles sector," he said addressing as the chief guest a programme arranged to honour seven organisations in the sector.

The programme was also arranged marking the National Textiles Day 2021 with the theme of this year's event "Globalisation of Textiles: Development of Bangladesh", held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

The event honoured the seven organistations for their roles and contributions during the onslaught of the Covid-19 which kept the wheels of the country's textiles sector and economy vibrant.

"The ministry of textiles and jute is always ready to extend all kinds of cooperation to the stakeholders of the textiles sector including attaining cent per cent capacity building in the backward linkage industry of oven garment sector," he said.

He also said that the ministry is prepared to face fourth industrial revolution (4IR) challenges.

He mentioned that due to the stimulus package provided by the government, the country's textiles and other sector were able to withstand the effect of coronavirus pandemic.

He said during the then Pakistan rule the textiles sector was dominated absolutely by non-Bengali people.

"Our textiles sector has developed notably and contributing a lot to the economy since the country's independence," he added.

Mr Gazi said that the government had established different textiles engineering colleges and institutes, vocational institutes, waiver training institutes and fashion design institute to create skilled manpower in this sector.

Noting that 'Dhakai Maslin House' was established aiming to commercialise this particular heritage of Bangladesh, he assured that the Department of Textiles will solve bottlenecks in the sector. He urged the stakeholders to keep the present growth of the sector intact.

The minister also honoured and gave crests to the seven organisations for their contributions to the textiles sector during the pandemic.

The organistiions are: Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Textiles Mills Association (BTMA), Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA), Bangladesh Specialised Textile Mills and Power-loom Industries (BSTMPIA), Bangladesh Terry Towel and Linen Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BTTLMEA) and the President of the Bangladesh Jatiya Tati Samity (Bangladesh National Weavers Association).

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, BTMA President Mohammad Ali Khokon, Executive President of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem, President of BSTMPIA Azizul Haq, President of BTTLMEA Shahadat Hossain Sohel, BGBA President Kazi Iftequer Hossain and Bangladesh Jatiya Tati Samity President Monwar Hossain were honoured and received crests from the minister on behalf of their respective organisations.

Textiles and Jute Secretary Md Abdour Rouf presided over the function.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jutes Mirza Azam was also present at the function.
