The government will construct 1,000 flats for its officials in the capital's Motijheel and Azimpur areas, Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain said on Tuesday.
He said: "The number of government officials is 150,000, but only 50,000 officials get accommodation facilities. The government will provide housing facilities to rest of the officials, and as part of that initiative these 1,000 flats will be constructed."
He said these while addressing as the chief guest of the first-ever 'International Elevator and Escalator Expo' at Basundhara Convention Center in the city. The fair will remain open from 9 am to 6 pm till tomorrow (Thursday).
The minister said the country's real estate sector has played an important role in developing national economy. A number of skyscrapers have been constructed with the boom of the sector. For this reason the demand of escalators and elevators has also increased.
"The government will build high-rise buildings in the capital and its adjacent areas. An initiative will be taken to build high-rises in Mohammadpur and Mirpur. Elevators and escalators will be needed in those buildings."
Among others, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) President and Shamsul Alamin Group Chairman Alamgir Shamsul Alamin were present at the function.
Around 70 companies of 20 countries, including India, China, Korea and Italy, are participating in the exposition, displaying elevators and escalators, elevator cabins, lift machines, elevator doors, over-speed governors, safety devices, hydraulic devices and other components of elevators and escalators.
