The government will procure 0.6 million tonnes of urea fertiliser from Qatar under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, officials said.
To this effect, the cabinet committee on public purchase is set to approve a proposal for urea import from the Gulf state tomorrow (Wednesday).
Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) had signed an agreement with 'Muntajat', a state-owned enterprise of Qatar, to import 0.2 million tonnes of bagged prilled (farm), 0.2 million tonnes of bagged granular and 0.2 million tonnes of bulk granular (optional) urea fertiliser from the Gulf state.
Bangladesh has been importing urea from Qatar since 2007. The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) has fixed a target to procure 2.8 million tonnes of urea in the fiscal year (FY) 2015-16. Of the total, over 1.3 million tonnes of urea will be imported from other countries while the rest will come from local fertiliser factories.
Other proposals which are likely to be placed at a meeting of the purchase committee for getting approval include appointment of an operator for operational and maintenance (O&M) of Bangabandhu Bridge and associated works for five years, modernisation of the signalling system of 11 railway stations on Chinki Astana-Chittagong section of Bangladesh Railway and building of new railway lines (over 56 kilometres) from Ishwardi to Dalakchar in Pabna.
Also, the cabinet committee on economic affairs is likely to give approval to the proposal on amendment/inclusion of Public Procurement Act, 2006 and Public Procurement Rules, 2008.
