The government is moving to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven data analytics system to strengthen monitoring of essential commodities and prevent supply disruptions that often trigger price volatility.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir announced the initiative while addressing a meeting on e-commerce implementation at the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday, according to a press statement issued by the ministry.
He said the AI platform would integrate data on domestic production, imports, exports, global market trends, and historical prices to help the authorities forecast supply shortages, identify optimal import timings and sources, and respond quickly to market risks.
The system would analyse up to 10 years of market data and generate predictive insights within minutes, replacing lengthy inter-ministerial consultations currently required for decision-making, he said.
The minister said the platform would enable the government to monitor commodities, such as onions and pulses, by tracking local production, seasonal deficits, international prices, and export capacities of supplier countries.
He added that the commerce ministry would develop the platform in coordination with the ministries of agriculture and food, using both government and international data sources to improve market management and ensure a stable year-round supply of essential goods.
The meeting, chaired by Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan, also discussed e-commerce development and technology-driven market governance.
