Govt vows best efforts on inland ship safety

CHITTAGONG, Mar 21: Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan assured all stakeholders at a seminar on Saturday that he would do his best in removing the obstacles to inland ship safety.
He asked the marine community to come forward and extend their help in reducing the number of inland ship disasters.
He was speaking as chief guest at the seminar on 'Inland Ship Safety' organised by the Chittagong branch of the Nautical Institute (London) at a hotel in the port city.
DG of the Department of Shipping Commodore M Zakiur Rahman spoke as special guest.
A large number of mariners, including stakeholders like inland and coastal ship owners and ship masters, attended the seminar, presided over by Capt. Shafique Bhuiyan, chairman of the Nautical Institute Bangladesh.
He also presented the keynote paper of the seminar.
In his keynote paper Capt Shafiq Bhuiyan highlighted the difficulties faced by coastal and inland ship owners in ensuring safety of their vessels and crew.
He requested the Ministry of Shipping to take measures for removing loopholes in the existing laws regarding procurement of necessary safety and navigational equipment for inland and coastal vessels, including fishing trawlers.
He called for recruitment of a sufficient number of ship surveyors and inspectors so that violation of rules by the owners and ship masters could be prevented.
Engineer Shafiqul Islam, principal officer of Mercantile Marine Department, moderated the seminar and Capt Kamrul Islam Majumdar, vice chairman of the Nautical Institute, offered the vote of thanks to the guests for taking interest in the subject of inland ship safety.
