Khandaker Mozammel Haque, the chairman of Grameen Bank, has died at the age of 74, reports bdnews24.com.
He passed away while undergoing treatment at the capital's Square Hospital on Thursday morning, said Md Abul Hossain, the microlender's general manager. Mozammel was suffering from a combination of kidney and other old-age complications.
His Namaz-e-Janaza was held in Dhanmondi's Taqwa Mosque after the Zohr prayers on Thursday.
He will be laid to rest in his village in Noakhali's Shenbag.
Between 1982 and 2003, Mozammel served as the general manager and director of the research, training, planning and special projects branch of Grameen Bank before assuming the post of chairman in 2011.
A former researcher at Oxford University, Mozammel served as a micro-credit consultant for the French Development Agency and the central banks of Sri Lanka and Nepal.
In 2006, Grameen Bank and its founder, Muhammad Yunus, won the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below" through micro-credit schemes.
But in January 2011, the government installed Mozammel as the chairman of Grameen Bank amid conjectures about the institution's founding managing director Yunus.
Three months later, Yunus was relieved of his duties by Bangladesh Bank for exceeding the age limit for the post of managing director. Mozammel subsequently made the headlines for speaking out on various irregularities in the management of the bank after Yunus stepped down.
