The High Court (HC) on Tuesday ordered maintenance of status quo on earth-filing and illegal occupation of natural wetland and water bodies at Aftabnagar Banashree Housing project in the city's Rampura-Khilgaon area.
Following a writ petition, an HC bench passed the order to maintain the status quo for the next three months, the concerned lawyer said.
At the same time, the court issued a four-week rule on the authorities concerned to explain as to why their inaction to protect the natural wetlands at the housing project area should not be declared illegal.
The HC bench also wanted to know as to why they should not be directed to remove the earth that was filled occupying the natural water bodies at the area, the lawyer said.
It further directed the authorities to draw an aerial map of the natural wetlands using Google or satellite and submit the same before the court within six weeks.
The project was undertaken by the Eastern Housing Ltd.
A rights organisation filed the petition while the respondents are the environment secretary, the housing and public works secretary, the land secretary, the Rajuk authority, the director general and the director (enforcement) of the environment department, the deputy commissioner (DC), Dhaka, the management of the Eastern Housing Ltd and Officers-in-Charge of Badda, Rampura, Sabujbag and Khilgaon police stations.
Advocate Manzill Murshid stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Taposh Kumar Biswas was for the government in the court.
