High fish, veg prices unsettle consumers


Prices of fish and some vegetables increased last week raising the woes of consumers already buffeted by the jump in prices of essentials.
Fish prices, especially those of indigenous, witnessed a hike by Tk 60-Tk 80 a kg last week.
Pabda based on size and quality was sold at Tk 600-Tk 950, tengra at Tk 450-Tk 600, golsha at Tk 500-Tk 650, shoul at Tk 450-Tk 600, shing and magur at Tk 600-Tk 850 a kg over the week.
Prices of Hilsa also witnessed a rise by Tk 80-Tk 100 per piece or kg.
Belal Hossain, a fish trader at Jigatola in the city, told the FE that prices increased significantly at the wholesales last week.
"Shoul was sold at Tk 400-Tk 500 a kg at Mawoa Ghat on Thursday, which was below Tk 350-Tk 400 seven days ago," he said.
President of the Bangladesh Fish Traders Association Golam Mortaza Montu told the FE that supply of fishes declined significantly this year following low catch in rivers and beels.
Prices of cauliflower and cabbage increased to Tk 30-Tk 35 per piece last week from Tk 25-Tk 30 earlier.
Prices of brinjal, bitter gourd, bottle gourd and local bean, which were almost static in the last two weeks, saw a Tk 5-Tk 10 hike at per kg or piece in seven days.
Brinjal was sold at Tk 40-Tk 50 and bottle gourd at Tk 45-Tk 70 per piece depending on size and quality.
Prices of ginger and onion, however, showed a slight decline-Tk 5 a kg during the period.
Onion was sold at Tk75-Tk 80 (imported) and Tk 80-Tk 90 (newly-harvested local variety) a kg last week.
Ginger, both of imported and local, was selling at Tk 120-Tk 140 a kg during the period.
