FE Report

Prices of Hilsa and poultry meat declined while onion and potato prices increased on Friday compared to a week back, according to traders of city kitchen markets.

After reaching a peak during the Pahela Baishakh festival (Bangla New Year celebration), Hilsa prices have started to fall in the market.

A medium-sized fish (700-800 gram) was sold at Tk550-650 on the day, which was Tk1150-1200 a week back.

Small sized Hilsa (below 500 gram) were sold at Tk300-400 per kg on the day -- roughly100 per cent reduction in a week.

Md Arman, a vendor at Nowabganj Bazar, said prices of many commodities have declined after the Pahela Baishakh.

He said many of the traders still have older stock of fish which they failed to sell during the festival.

"The stored fish has flooded the market. Prices also declined in the Hilsa hubs which are helping ease price," he said.

Prices of poultry meat both of broiler, local and Pakistani have reduced.

Broiler chicken was sold at Tk160-165 per kg on the day which was Tk170-175 per kg a week back.

Pakistani variety of medium sized was sold at Tk220-250 per piece-Tk80-100 decline in a week.

Prices of indigenous varieties also witnessed a Tk50-60 decline at per piece, traders said.

However, despite having a huge supply, prices of onion and potato increased in last seven days.

Onion was sold at Tk 35-36 (local), Tk30-34 (Indian) on the day--Tk4-5 hike in week while potato prices increased by Tk2 per kg as diamond variety was sold at Tk20-22 and granola at Tk18-20 per kg on the day.

Most of the summer vegetables were sold at between Tk40 and Tk 70 per kg--almost static compared to a week back.

Newly arrived teasel gourd was the costliest vegetable sold at Tk65-70 per kg on the day.

Prices of animal meat including beef, mutton and buffalo were also static maintaining the higher price range.

Beef was sold at Tk 370-380 per kg, mutton at Tk 580-600 per kg in the city markets on the day.
