CHATTOGRAM, Dec 25: A hydraulic survey of the River Karnaphuli will start from January 29 next year.

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is going to conduct the survey titled 'hydraulic and hydrological study of River Karnaphuli' at a cost of Tk 140 million.

Sources said the CPA signed an agreement with HR Wallingford Company of the United Kingdom (UK) on November 18 last to carry out the hydraulic survey of the River Karnaphuli.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Chatterton Dickson, CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Abul Kalam Azad and high officials concerned were present at the signing ceremony.

CPA's Chief Hydrographer M Arifur Rahman said HR Wallingford and CPA on Monday held a kick-off meeting on hydraulic and hydrological study of River Karnaphuli.

The British company sought information on the Karnaphuli from CPA which will be provided by January 5, he added.

"If the Covid-19 pandemic does not hamper the works, the survey is likely to be started from January 29 next."

He also said, "If the coronavirus spreads fast next month and flights to and from UK are suspended, the survey may be delayed."

The survey will find out the navigational channel's future, limitation of the navigation of the river, garbage management, hydrological connection with jetties and Bay Terminal etc.

The survey will also recommend measures to save the river with its optimal use, said sources in CPA.

The CPA chairman said the Chittagong Port Authority conducted the same survey for the last time in 1961.

According to the survey report of 1961, he said, the CPA is taking up projects for development of Chittagong port.

He also expressed the hope that the new hydraulic survey of the River Karnaphuli will open doors for the development of Chittagong port.
