The World Congress of the International Economic Association (IEA) began at King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre in the Dead Sea, Jordan Friday.  It aims to promote interaction among prominent economists towards gaining a truly world perspective on issues of global importance.

The seventeenth World Congress is jointly organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and IEA.

IEA is the international federation of national economic associations, formed by a core group of academics, scholars and distinguished economists, from developed and developing countries.

Around 500 participants are taking part from different countries in the five-daylong congress to discuss various issues, including world economic situation, future of development thought, supply chains and integration in Asia, macro-economic externalities, monetary policy in a post-crisis world, new approaches to economics of inequality, capital account regulations, and rise of China, according to the organisers.

First day of the programme started with some relevant issues of behavioural and experimental economics, and some concurrent issues of development economics.

A four-member Bangladesh delegation is taking part in the congress.

"Developmental and sustainable growth issues are receiving due emphasis in the conference," Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, professor and director of Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM), told the FE.

Dr. Habib, who is also a member of the Bangladesh delegation, said the IEA congress is expected to come up with various lessons for the developing countries like Bangladesh.
