Agriculture Secretary Eunusur Rahman urged the importers Saturday not to import substandard fertiliser.
"Substandard fertiliser is one of the most detrimental components that is destroying fertility of the country's land day by day," he said while speaking at the 21st annual general meeting of the Bangladesh Fertiliser Association(BFA) at Officer's Club Auditorium in the city.
Chaired by BFA chairman Kamrul Asraf Khan, MP, the meeting was also addressed by Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, Awami League whip in parliament Shahiduzzaman Sarkar and Industries secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan.
FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said Bangladesh attained self-sufficiency in food due to proper management of fertiliser.
"We don't need to import food any more; rather we can export it after attaining self-sufficiency. The proper use of fertiliser and its proper distribution are the key reasons behind achieving autarky in food," he said.
The FBCCI president said had Bangladesh moved for importing food, the country's foreign currency reserve would not have been so high.
Speaking on the occasion, Awami League whip in parliament Shahiduzzaman Sarkar appreciated the role of the agriculture sector and said Bangladesh does not require to import food now as the country is heading towards progress in other sectors.
Industries secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the government is giving subsidy to the agri-sector to help the poor and the government must ensure use of subsidy in the sector.
