Bangladesh jute sector is facing rough time after the Jute Commissioner of India imposed restrictions on the import of jute and jute goods from Bangladesh by the Indian importers.
A news release issued by the Bangladesh Jute Goods Exporters' Association (BJGEA) on Sunday said the decision of the Indian authority has already put them at risk and it feared incurring a loss of Tk 1.0 billion deposited in advance by the Indian importers.
The conditions imposed by the India Jute Commissioner will obstruct import of jute and jute goods from Bangladesh by any Indian importer independently, said the release.
On the other hand, if Bangladeshi jute mills cannot export the ordered goods immediately, they cannot pay the salary and bonus to the mill workers, which may create labourer unrest.
Moreover, if the jute mills stop production, the jute farmers may be deprived of fair prices during this peak season.
The decision of the jute commissioner also indicates clear violation of the principles of SAPTA and SAARC.
The exporters' association called upon the Indian Jute Commissioner to immediately withdraw this kind of notice.
The association also urged the textiles and jute and commerce ministry to resolve the problem by immediately opening negotiations with the Indian authority.
