FE Report
The government will take necessary steps to set up a plastic industrial park in the country, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said on Friday.
To this effect Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has formulated a development project proposal.
The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the 10th International Plastic Fair 2015 at the city's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
The four-day fair was jointly organised by Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) and Chan Chao International Co Ltd of Taiwan.
The industries minister said plastic goods manufacturers have been demanding for a park for a long time. Earlier, a project was also taken for this park but it was relocated. Now it will be set up at 50 acres of land at Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj district.
The minister also assured the plastic products manufacturers of meeting up their demands such as giving membership of BPGMEA under Jatiya Shilpa Unnayan Parishad.
He also said government is always supportive for eco-friendly industrialisation. He urged the plastic goods producers to come forward for establishing environment-friendly industries.
Member of Parliament and also chairman of the Bengal Group of Industries Morshed Alam, Managing Director of Luna Plastic Industry, A S M Kamal Uddin, Executive Director Overseas of Chan Chao International Co Ltd Judy Wang, among others, were present at the programme.
During the plastic fair, manufacturers got massive response from the local and foreign buyers. They also got a significant number of spot orders for their products, said organisers.
They said although they were worried about getting targeted visitors due to the ongoing blockade and hartals, they got enough response from the visitors.
BPGMEA President Jasim Uddin stated that around 300 stalls were set up in the fair. Of those 100 were local and 200 were by foreign participants. Some 12 countries participated in the international plastic expo.
Through the fair Bangladeshi plastic products have got popularity abroad. If the sector gets policy support from the ministry concerned, the manufacturers will be able to increase new markets and export earnings, the BPGMEA president said.
He also mentioned some obstacles to this sector like suspension of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) by USA for Bangladesh etc.
Mr Jasim also urged for giving cash incentive from the government until the withdrawal of sanction on GSP facilities.
The local and international participants showed their products at the fair including household items, packaging materials, plastic mould, toy items, pharmaceutical items, plastic furniture, melamine items etc.
There are nearly 5,000 plastic goods manufacturing units in the country with some 2,500 different types of products available at present. The sector has created income generation for about 1.2 million people directly and indirectly.
