A move is underway to allocate 610 acres of land to several private investors for starting the first phase of establishing country's lone industrial city in Mirersarai close by the port city of Chittagong.

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) under the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has received response from a number of business groups interested to develop special economic blocks in the vast industrial hub.

Three of the large bidders submitted their request for proposal (RFP) for appointment of developers to the Mirersarai Economic Zone-one of the ten recently given the go.

BEZA invited bids on February 4 last for the EZ, officials said.

The bidders are Powerpac-East West-Gasmin Consortium, Joint venture of Energypac Power Generation Ltd, Unique Hotel and Resorts Ltd, Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Pedrollo nk Ltd, Saima Samira Textile Mills Ltd, M/s Integrated Land and Infrastructure Development and Bengal Farab JV.

Talking to the FE correspondent, BEZA Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury said the authority has moved to build the industrial city in 30,000 acres of land spanning over Mirersarai in Chittagong and neighbouring Feni district.

Recently, Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) sought some 1200 acres of land from the BEZA in Mirersarai.

"We hope to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) shortly with the BEPZA for jointly working to develop the zone," he said.

The experience and expertise of the BEPZA will help in expediting construction of the proposed industrial city, he added.
