The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to start the process of conducting feasibility study on mass rapid transit (MRT) line-1 and eastern bypass - two projects of the government to ease traffic congestion in and around the capital.
The Japanese government's lending arm also assured Bangladesh of funding the planned railway bridge over the river Jamuna.
A JICA delegation informed these to a delegation of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges (MoRTB) at a meeting at JICA headquarters in Japan.
MoRTB Minister Obaidul Quader and JICA Senior Vice President Domichi Hideaki led their respective delegations in the meeting.
During the meeting, the minister also requested for JICA's funding for more infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, including construction of MRT-1 and MRT-5, tunnel under the Jamuna, Panchgachhi Bridge and some connecting roads.
The JICA side informed the meeting that they will start the process of conducting the feasibility study of MRT-1 and eastern bypass side by side, updating the country strategic paper.
The JICA senior vice president highlighted Bangladesh's stable economic growth and huge young working generation.
He also reiterated the assurance of providing JICA's continuous support to the country's growth and infrastructure development.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan Masud bin Momen, economic minister of Bangladesh Embassy Dr Jibon Ranjan Mojumder, and the deputy secretary of Roads Division were present in the meeting.
