KHULNA, July 29 (BSS): Around 41,000 tonnes of fish and fisheries goods worth about Tk 21.46 billion were exported from Khulna during the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Of the fish and fisheries products exported, around 16,000 tonnes were shrimp valued at around Tk 17.44 billion, while 25,000 tonnes consisted of white fish and other fisheries goods worth over Tk 4.0 billion.
Joydeb Paul, District Fisheries Officer (DFO), disclosed the figures during a view exchange meeting with journalists at the deputy commissioner's conference room in the city on Monday ahead of National Fisheries Week-2024 campaign, scheduled to begin on July 30.
In the FY 2022-23, the Bangladesh Frozen Food Exporters Association (BFFEA) exported around 45 tonnes of fish and fisheries goods worth around Tk 28.23 billion, he added.
The DFO highlighted that Khulna, a coastal district now recognised for its surplus in fish and fisheries production, has seen substantial growth. Fish farmers in the region are successfully producing a wide variety of products, including Hilsa, crab, kuchia, tilapia, as well as 'Galda' and 'Tiger' (Bagda) shrimp.
He noted that Khulna has produced a total of 125,000 tonnes of fish and fisheries products against 57,000 tonnes of demand for the district's 2.6 million people.
Deputy Commissioner Khondokar Yasir Arefin presided over the meeting.
He said farmers should take necessary steps about fish farming to protect natural fish fries side by side other crops farming.
The DC urged the journalists to launch a campaign ahead of the National Fisheries Week-2024.
With the theme, 'Bhorbo Mache Moder Desh, Gorbo Smart Bangladesh', the department of fisheries will carry out a massive campaign in Khulna on July 30.
On July 31, the programme will begin with releasing fish fries at the pond of Shaheed Hadis Park in the morning.
