The Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) has proposed introducing entrepreneurship related courses in the universities aiming to address the country's unemployment problem.

BIDA Executive Chairman Kazi M Aminul Islam made the proposal to Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah during a meeting at the latter's office in the city on Wednesday, according to a statement.

During the meeting, the BIDA chief said there is a serious need for creating new entrepreneurs to achieve the country's economic goals.

"We are offering education to our youths aimed at getting them employed," he observed, suggesting "But we should create opportunities for their (entrepreneurial) skill development through education so that they become entrepreneurs and provide jobs to others."

Hailing the proposal, Dr Kazi Shahidullah said the UGC would instruct all the universities to introduce well-planned courses related to entrepreneurship.

Top officials of both the organisations were present during the meeting, the statement said.

It mentioned that the BIDA has already launched Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Project (ESDP).

The project has been introduced at district levels following the training of the trainers. The project is operating well.

Kicked off this year, the two-year long ESDP aims at creating 24,000 entrepreneurs in 64 districts of Bangladesh through proper training and other necessary support thus the country can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
