LGED meet proposes \\\'service lanes\\\' in regional roads

The Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) has stressed introduction of `service lanes' in the country's regional roads enabling the slow-moving vehicles to ply by avoiding accidents.  

The topic was raised by speakers as the two-day review meeting of LGED for the year 2013-14 concluded at its headquarters in the capital on Tuesday.

LGED Chief Engineer Md Wahidur Rahman inaugurated the meeting and asked the engineers concerned to be cautious about maintaining fairness and neutrality in dealing with development work by visiting spots.  The chief engineer asked them to go for constructing RCC roads in phases, instead of bituminous roads, because bituminous roads are more prone to damage by rains.  He noted that lack of supervision in construction work and poor maintenance in LGED activities had been found.  

He said LGED has been contributing significantly to rural and urban infrastructure development in the county and proposed to introduce `service lanes'.

The LGED chief engineer said as the department would construct a good number of major bridges, measuring over 1000 metres each, it was necessary to take adequate care by the field engineers to ensure their quality.

All additional chief engineers, superintending engineers, executive engineers, project directors, deputy project directors and upazila engineers of LGED were present at the review meeting.
