FE REPORT

The state-run Petrobangla will buy one cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from US-based Excelerate Energy to meet the domestic demand due to supply crunch from local gas fields.

The cabinet committee on government purchase approved a proposal to this end on Wednesday, alongside endorsing two proposals to import 70,000 tonnes of fertilisers.

Finance minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali presided over the meeting held in the conference room of the cabinet division at the secretariat.

Briefing the media after the meeting, cabinet division secretary (coordination and reforms) Mahmudul Hossain Khan said Excelerate would supply LNG to Petrobangla at Tk 6.092 billion with each unit costing $13.55.

The meeting also approved a proposal for the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) to buy 40,000 tonnes of DAP (di-ammonium phosphate) from MA'ADEN, Saudi Arabia, at Tk 2.468 billion.

The phosphorus fertiliser will cost $523 per tonne in this procurement.

The BADC will also import 30,000 tonnes of MOP (muriate of potash) from JSC Foreign Economic Corporation, Prodintorg, Russia, at Tk 975.27 million, with each tonne costing $275.50.

The committee also gave the go-ahead to a proposal for signing an agreement between Sylhet Gas Fields Limited and Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation, China, to dig a gas well in Sylhet.

The deal will cost the exchequer Tk 4.448 billion.
