Local brands going global

Bangladeshi brands have been making foray into the international market thanks to better quality and diversity of products, officials of the groups say.

The brands, which have become leaders in the domestic market, include garments, medicine, battery, furniture, tea, agro processed food, and footwear.

"Our brands are gradually making inroads and getting popular among global consumers for better quality," Niaz Rahim, group director of Rahimafrooz, told the FE.

Rahimafrooz Batteries Ltd (RBL), a concern of Rahimafrooz, is the largest lead-acid battery manufacturer in country and exports battery to more than 5 countries around the world.

Mr Rahim said RBL is manufacturing about 200 different varieties of batteries for automotive, motorcycle, IPS and other applications, which secured markets such as Japan, China and India.

Subrata Kumar Chakraborty, deputy general manager of a leading furniture manufacturer Otobi, said "We're the leader in the local market and roping in the selective buyers in foreign markets for better quality and competitive prices".

He said with more then 30 per cent annual growth, Otobi has shipped its furniture to 50 countries pulling in Tk 600 million last year.

Kamruzzaman Kamal, Director (Marketing) of PRAN group said "We're the largest exporter of processed food from Bangladesh and our products are being exported to over 94 countries in the global markets".

He said the company has been manufacturing and exporting products including juice, snacks, soft drink, and dairy products using its own brand.

He said Pran's agro-products have good demand mostly in middle-eastern and African countries global market due to international standard quality, competitive prices range and vigorous marketing strategy.

"We exported products worth $20 million in 2013 which was more than half of Bangladesh's total processed food export earning," he told the FE.

He said India, Middle-East, the US, the UK are the key export destinations of the company.

Dr. Momenul Haq, managing director of General Pharmaceuticals Ltd, said currently a good number of pharmaceutical companies have international accreditation to export drugs.

"Our aim is to leverage our resources so that we can venture into new territories", he said.

He said local pharmaceuticals have been exporting to more than 94 countries across the world and their strategy is to capitalise on the generic drug making.

Aarong, Yellow, Cats Eye, Monsoon Rain, and some other groups are now trying to enter the international fashion market.
