The prices of local onion fell slightly in the last few days in the kitchen market after the supply of local variety increased, traders said.
The supply of local variety named 'murikata' increased in the kitchen markets. The wholesale price of a kilogram of local onion was sold between Tk 24 to Tk 25, which was Tk 27-Tk 28 three days back, Narayan Chadra Shaha, a wholesaler of onion of Shyampur market told the FE.
"The farmers cannot preserve this local variety of onion as it is storable only for 10 to 15 days. So they sell it from the field," he said.
Faridpur, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Meherpur, Rajbari are major indigenous onion producing areas.
A kg of local onion was sold between Tk 40 to Tk 44 on Sunday, down from Tk 44-Tk 48 three days back, according to different kitchen markets of the city.
The country produces 1.6 to 1.7 million tonnes of onion annually while the demand is around 2.0 million, according to the Department of Agriculture Extension.
