CHITTAGONG, May 10 (BSS): Minister for Housing and Public Works Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said Saturday the government signed a primary deal with the Malaysian government recently to construct 100 thousand (one lakh) apartments in Dhaka city.
"We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia to construct one lakh apartments in the Uttara 3rd phase, Jhilmil Project, Kamrangirchar and other suitable areas in the capital," he added.
The minister was speaking at a discussion at the Chittagong Press Club auditorium in the afternoon.
Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) organised the function on the occasion of May Day 2014.
Speaking at the function as the chief guest, the minister said National Housing Authority was implementing the project for the people of low and middle income groups and the government would try to complete the project within next four years.
The housing minister also said Malaysia would use modern technology to build the high-rises which would have safety measures including prevention of earthquake damage.
"The Malaysian envoy informed the government that they would take 30 months' time to complete the work", he added.
Mosharraf said the government was going to develop a large number of plots in different upazilas in the country very soon.
"Proper modern civic facilities including gas and electricity connection, sports and educational institutions will be included in the projects," he added.
He said the government already developed plots in over 50 upazillas in the country and it would cover 460 upazilas very soon.
"The government mulls developing the Chittagong DC hill to turn it into an aesthetic and planned one," the minister added.
Former president of Chittagong Union of Journalists M Nasirul Hoq presented the keynote paper on "May Day: Newspapers of Chittagong Perspective.".
CUJ president Ezaz Yusufi presided over the function while Secretary General of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, Treasurer Khairuzzaman Kamal and General Secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Quddus Afrad, BFUJ leaders Abu Taher Mohammad, Asif Siraj, DUJ treasurer Shahnaz Shelly, former Chittagong Press Club president Abu Sufian and former CUJ president Shahidul Alam, among others, spoke on the occasion.
