RAJSHAHI, July 14 (BSS): After around one-and-a-half month long brisk business, mango trading in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts is now fizzling out amid the last moment exorbitant price.
Taking the advantage of the holy month of Ramadan coupled with short supply, the sellers are charging high prices for mangoes.
Mangoes of the two districts are conventionally of the late ripening type and the growers can also keep their fruits on trees for long so the farmers and businessmen get higher prices.
Against the backdrop of higher supplies of mangoes to different parts of the county and the ongoing month of Ramadan, prices of the delicious and mouth-watering fruits have run high in the local markets.
Fazli mango, one of the major late varieties, is now being sold at Tk 70 to Tk 100 per kg depending of size and quality, while another tasty variety-Langra- is being sold at Tk 140 to Tk 150 per kg.
Every year, acreage, the number of trees and mango production are increasing. However, unfortunately, not a single mango-processing plant has been established here, which is hindering expansion of mango market.
This year, safe and hygienic mangoes were sold abundantly throughout the season due mainly to administrative measures and collective efforts of both government and non-government organisations (NGOs).
The Regional Horticulture Research Centre (RHRC) in Chapainawabgonj and the Rajshahi Fruit Research Centre carried out vigorous campaigns and programmes against the use of chemicals in mangoes.
Chief Scientific Officer of RHRC Dr Shafiqul Islam said there were about 3.0 million (30 lakh) mango trees on some 32,816 hectares of land in the region with setting up of many more new mango orchards and increased mango farming in homesteads in recent years.
