On the occasion of the World Environment Day 2015, a new initiative to raise awareness among children about proper preservation of the mangrove forest has been launched at a remote school on the edge of the Sundarbans in Munshiganj under Shyamnagar in Satkhira.
Titled as The Mangrove Children, the initiative focuses on educating children of the area about the importance of the mangrove forest and building their capacity to deal with disaster risks due to climate change. Also, the children will be motivated to use their emotional influence on their fathers to refrain from going to the forest for logging and collecting honey, said a statement. The programme was launched through a simple ceremony at the Sundarban Govt. Girl's High School in Munshiganj recently. Local Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Sayed Md. Monzurul Islam, teachers, NGO representatives and secondary level students were present. Piloted by Nature Alliance, a private initiative for environmental care, the program envisages training teachers to conduct a variety of learning pursuits for their students on the issues. These range from art contest to story- telling to short drama.
