CHATTOGRAM, Oct 08: The authorities have decided to start operation of the first unit of Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant next month (November).

Work of the dream project at Matarbari in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar has already been completed and the power plant also witnessed a successful completion of its trial production last month (September).

Project Director (PD) of the power plant project Engineer Abul Kalam Azad said the trial production of the first unit of the two unit-power plant completed in the first week of September after a test run for over one month generating 600 MW power.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to open the first unit of Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant in November this year," he said, expressing the hope that the unit will then produce electricity at its full capacity.

The Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) is implementing the project.

The second unit with 600 MW capacity is expected to start generating power by March 2024.

The CPGCBL has developed a jetty for the plant.

After completion of the work on the first jetty at the Matarbari power plant, the commercial cargo ship named Venus Triumph arrived on December 29, 2020, paving the way for the transportation of various parts of the power plant by subsequent ships.

The power plant has been built adjacent to the sea, which will not be affected by cyclone or tide as a 14-metre embankment above the sea level was constructed and the power plant is located inside the dam keeping in mind the highest tide in Bangladesh at a height of 10 metres.

The project involves building a coal-fired power plant with the capacity of generating 1,200 MW power.

It is affiliated with the facilities over a period of seven years with the funding provided by JICA.

Japan's Sumitomo, Toshiba, and IHI are collaborating as a consortium to implement the project, with POSCO E&C subcontracted to construct the major part of the plant.

As part of its commitment to support the region's economy, POSCO E&C has employed some 4,000 local workers daily on average.

The project is being implemented to meet growing electricity demand and to improve stable power supply by installing 1200 MW (600MWx2 units) coal-fired power plant at Matarbari in Maheshkhali Upazila of Cox's Bazar district.

Total cost of the project is Tk518.5488 billion (GOB to provide Tk64.0616 billion, JICA Tk439.2103 billion and CPGCBL Tk 15.2769 billion).
