Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) M Manjur Alam reiterated his commitment to make Chittagong an ideal tourism destination.
The mayor said this speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a three-day international tourism fair-Chittagong Travel Mart-2013-in the port city of Chittagong on Thursday, said a press release.
He also called upon foreign airlines to start operations from the port city.
The Bangladesh Monitor, travel publication, arranged the fair for the fifth time.
Participants from home and abroad, including airlines, tour operators, hotels, resorts, amusement parks and organisations, providing tourism related services, are exhibiting their products and services in the fair.
President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam and Editor of the Dainik Azadi MA Malek were present at the inaugural function as the special guests.
In his address, CCCI president stressed the need for developing the connectivity of the commercial capital of the country. According to him, Chittagong can be a tourist destination for the people of the neighbouring "Seven Sister" states of India.
He also urged the government to declare Chittagong as a tourism hub.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Malek stressed the need for projecting the cultural heritage and handicrafts of Chittagong region.
He also laid emphasis on identifying attractive tourism products of the area and launching a programme like "See nature as it is."
He further requested the mayor to take steps to solve communication problems of Chittagong.
A total of 16 organisations from home and abroad are taking part in the fair.
The participating organisations are: Regent Airways, United Airways, Bangkok Airways, Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Healthcare, The Peninsula Chittagong, Long Beach Hotel, Grand Sultan Tea Resort, ACE Aviation, Nagar Valley Hotel, Jinghua Bangla Tours, Grand Prince Hotel, Unique Immigration, Amazing Tours and Best Bangla Tours.
All the organisations are offering special discount on fair for airline tickets, hotel and resort accommodations and tour packages during the fair.
The fair is open from 10am to 8pm daily and there is no entry fee.
