Government will set its strategy today to keep essential commodities prices under control during the Ramadan, a high official said.
A meeting between the importers, wholesalers, stakeholders and government concerned departments will be held at the Export Promotion Bureau (WPB) today (Monday).
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will preside over the meeting.
"We will sit with the importers, wholesalers and officials concerned of the government to fix the strategy for controlling the prices of essential commodities keeping the supply chain smooth during the Ramadan," senior secretary of the ministry of commerce (MoC) Hedayetullal Al Mamoon told the FE Sunday.
Earlier there was another meeting between the importers, wholesalers and government officials last month for reviewing the prices of essential commodities, supply chain, import scenario and letter of credit (LCs) situation.
Mr Mamoon said that the MoC will increase the number of market monitoring teams for the capital to 16 from 14 for the Ramadan.
Besides the districts administration will remain vigil for carrying out the government directives to control the prices of essential commodities during the month of fasting.
He said that the supply chain of the essential commodities is now stable and there is no possibility of increasing the prices of essential commodities during the month.
Apart from the market monitoring teams of the MoC, the authorities of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) will strengthen its market monitoring drive during the Ramadan.
The DNCRP is now working in 60 districts of the country to check food adulteration as well as protecting the consumers' rights.
Till May the DNCRP has carried out its operations at 49,000 different commercial businesses and realised nearly Tk 100 million for violation of Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009.
Besides it also realised Tk 53 million from 4806 businesses for selling formalin mixed fruits, mixing chemical with foods and processing foods without following proper hygienic.
