Mexican co seeks to import from Bangladesh

High-powered delegation likely to arrive in Feb

A Mexican company wants to resume its business ties again with Bangladesh aiming to import knitwear products from the country, although it had stopped business with the latter, source said.

A high-powered delegation of Grupo Textil CIMS headed by its director general expressed its interest to visit Bangladesh on February 21-25, 2023 and it requested the Bangladesh mission in Mexico to take steps in this connection.

The Bangladesh embassy recently has requested the government authorities including commerce and foreign minitries to arrange required footstep in this regard.

It expressed hope that the proposed visit will strengthen business relations between Bangladesh and Mexico.

During the visit, the CIMS will meet with Bangladesh knitwear producers including leaders of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to import such products from Bangladesh.

The company has been working on knitwear items across the Mexico from 2017, the letter added.

The third largest country in Latin America is Bangladesh's important and potential trading partner. Bangladesh's export to the Latin country has been rising since the opening of its diplomatic mission in 2012.

In fiscal year (FY) 2020-21, two-way trade between both nations amounted to US$ 197.62 million, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data.

Bangladesh exported goods worth U$ 172.85 million, with more that 90 per cent being the clothing items in the FY '21.

The volume of import was U$S 24.77 million from the North American country in the same period.

Bangladesh’s exports to Mexico are dominated by the apparels. The other major export items include cotton, textiles, and footwear and leather products, they added.

Bangladesh's major imports from Mexico include medicine, beer, tequila, machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment; vehicles, aircraft, vessels, textiles & textile articles, vegetable products, mineral products, etc.
