September 17, 2019 00:00:00

The newly-introduced Mobile Harbour Crane (MHC) started functioning by unloading containers from a ship from Singapore, namely 'Kota-Ria (container carrier ship)' at the Mongla Sea Port in Bagerhat district, reports BSS.

The MPA collected the new container handling equipment with a cost of around Tk 440 million (Tk 44 crore) for ensuring better functioning of the port activities.

With 84 metric tonnes hoisting capacity and the highest 14 lines carrying gearless ship handling capability, the 'MHC' will have to unload huge container within a short period, said Md Makruzzaman, Deputy Secretary of the Mongla Port Authority (MPA).

"Ship handling (time) will be shortened after using the 'MHC' and quantity of container handling will enhance for many times," he said.

Acting chairman and also member (finance) of MPA Yasmin Afsana, member (engineering and development) Engineer Md Altaf Hossain Khan, chief security officer Lt. Commander M Abdul Aleem and chief engineer Sheikh Sowkat Ali (crane & harbour) were present during the start of the handling activities with the MHC.

Talking to the news agency, project director and deputy chief engineer (mechanical and electrical) Mahbubur Rahman Mina said dynamism will be brought in the Mongla Sea Port jetty through introduction of the MHC.
