Chief of the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the political risk insurance and credit enhancement arm of the World Bank (WB), Keiko Honda arrives in the city today (Sunday) on a four-day visit, the WB Dhaka office said Saturday.
During her visit, MIGA Executive Vice President Ms Honda will have meetings with the finance, planning and communications ministers, and the private and public sector enterprises to identify areas where MIGA can help Bangladesh mobilise capital for important power and infrastructure projects.
Meanwhile, at the IMF-World Bank spring meeting in Washington on April 11-13 Finance Minister AMA Muhith requested the MIGA head to expand the agency's activities in Bangladesh.
MIGA's current gross exposure in Bangladesh is US$330 million, the WB said.
Since MIGA's inception in 1988, the agency has insured projects in Bangladesh in several sectors, including power, manufacturing, telecommunications, and banking.
Most recently, the agency issued guarantee to a loan from the HSBC by the sate-owned Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd for setting up a 450-megawatt power plant.
In a statement issued by the WB Dhaka office Ms Honda said: "While Bangladesh's recent economic growth is certainly of a positive trend, it brings higher demand for power and better infrastructure."
"We believe MIGA can play a continued, important role in catalyzing investments in the country," she said in the statement.
