Experts from more than 50 countries will gather today in Dhaka to discuss migration and development issue, putting spotlight on mobility in the post-MDG period.
In the two-day meeting, technical experts and representatives from the key ministries of member states, civil society members and international organisations will discuss issues related to health, decent work, education, governance and means of implementation.
Foreign secretary Shahidul Haque announced this at a meeting at the Foreign Office.
He said the meeting will provide a forum to link the United Nations High-level Dialogue with the post 2015 agenda so that migration can be an integral part of the sustainable development goals.
"We expect a global consensus on migration and development, which will be used by the international community to lead in the negotiations beginning at the United Nations General Assembly next September," he said.
The secretary said the dedicated meeting will adopt a technical document on specific targets and indicators for use by the international community and get priority in the UNGA.
He added there will be lots of discussion and state-centric exercises as well to adopt the technical statement, which will also be non-political.
"Though migration is a very sensitive issue, it has own inherent strength to drive development. The meeting will find out the technical issues to bring global consensus between the sending and recipient countries," he added.
The Global Expert Meeting, organised jointly by the foreign ministry and expatriates' welfare and overseas employment ministry with support from the Swiss government will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ruposhi Bangla hotel.
Some 88 representatives from 58 countries have so far confirmed their participation in the meeting. The countries participation confirmed so far include Afganistan, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Benin, Bolvia, Botswana, Brazil, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Ghana, India, Jamaika, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey and Zambia.
The international and civil society organizations are AFFORD, Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa, Global Coaliation on Migration, International Organisation of Migration, ICMC, International Trade Union Confederation, Migrant Forum in Asia and Papa Giovanni. The UN agencies UN DESA, UNDP, UNESCO, UNITAR and OECD will be attending the event.
Among others, Expatriates Secretary Shawkat Hossain, Director General of Bureau of Manpower Employment Training Shamsun Nahan, Charge de affairs of Switzerland Embassy Caroline Trantweiler, Director General Salauddin Noman Chowdhury, Deputy Permanent Representative Mustafizur Rahman and minister of permanent mission in Geneva Nahida sobhan spoke on the occasion.
They highlighted the related forum and groups working on the migration and migrants to shape up the issues for the Sustainable Development Goals.
