Minimum wage for workers of plastic industry will be fixed, said labour and employment secretary Mikail Shipar on Thursday.
"After getting proposals from the plastic factory owners and workers, the minimum wage for the industry will be fixed," he said.
Mr Shipar said this while speaking as the chief guest of the closing ceremony of a training course titled 'Plastic injection moulding machine operation and maintenance.' Bangladesh Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (BIPET) conducted the programme. A total of 30 trainees received certificates from him on the occasion.
The secretary also said: "Skill development is very important issue of our life. Bangladeshi workers are low paid in the foreign working destinations due to lack of skill, whereas Chinese and Indian workers are skilled as well as certificate-holders."
He said the government has taken a three-year national action plan for skill development, focusing on the country's youth.
Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association President Jasim Uddin urged the government to provide infrastructural support to set up a training institute for plastic industry in Dhaka.
He said if the government provides the infrastructural support, the industry owners will add necessary machinery for the institute to train up the workers.
Industry leaders said India has Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) in its every state, whereas Bangladesh is yet to set up a full-fledged training institute.
