FE REPORT | February 27, 2024 00:00:00

The mobile operators in the country witnessed a decline in January of over two million mobile internet users, as per the latest report from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

According to BTRC data, the count of mobile internet subscribers decreased to 129.18 million by the end of January, down from 131.37 million the previous month.

During the same period, the total number of mobile users also fell by 350,000 to 190.46 million in January, compared to 190.81 million in the previous month.

Notably, both the second-largest mobile operator, Robi, and the third-largest, Banglalink, experienced a reduction in mobile users during January after a prolonged period of growth.

Robi's subscriber base declined from 58.67 million in December to 58.27 million in January, while Banglalink's subscribers dropped from 43.48 million to 43.44 million during the same period.

Conversely, the largest operator, GrameenPhone, witnessed a slight increase, reaching 82.27 million in January from 82.20 million in December.

In contrast, the state-owned operator Teletalk registered a positive trend by adding 0.02 million new subscribers during this period.

The term "subscriber" refers to biometric-verified individuals with any activity (voice, data, SMS, etc.) at least once in the preceding 90 days while an "internet subscriber" pertains to individuals who have accessed the internet at least once in the preceding 90 days.

Out of the total internet subscribers in January (129.18 million), 12.88 million are broadband subscribers, showing no change from the previous month, while mobile internet users account for 116.30 million.

BTRC calculates the ISP subscriber information through intense market analysis, consultation and data collection from almost all ISPs.
