The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) will ask the district officials to strengthen market monitoring during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
With this end in view the MoC will send letters to the deputy commissioners (DCs) to strictly monitor kitchen markets in their respective areas during the month of fasting.
"We will send letters to all the DCs soon asking them to strengthen market monitoring so that unscrupulous traders could not earn undue profits from the consumers during Ramadan," an additional secretary of the ministry concerned told the FE.
He said the MoC has asked the Directorate of National Consumers' Rights Protection (DNCRP) to intensify market monitoring operations for protection of the consumers' interest during Ramadan.
Law enforcement and intelligence agencies will be asked to remain alert to contain the rise in prices of essentials.
Apart from strengthening market monitoring drive, the MoC will hold meetings soon with the traders to maintain smooth supply of essentials and keep prices stable during the holy month.
Profit mongers usually increase the prices of essential commodities such as sugar, soybean oil, lentils, grams, dates, green chilli and brinjal artificially during Ramadan.
Traders at the city's Karwan Bazar wholesale market told the FE that they will keep the prices of essential items at tolerable level during the Ramadan. They also said that there will be no shortage of supply of essential commodities during the month of fasting.
The stocks of essentials are now sufficient, they said adding there would be no disruption in supply chain of commodities and the prices would remain stable during Ramadan.
