MoC to devise strategy to check price hike in Ramadan

The government sits tomorrow (Thursday) with some agencies concerned to draw up a plan ahead of Ramadan so that prices of key essential items remain under control in the holy month, officials said.

The meeting at the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) will review the prices of essential items in the city kitchen markets, they said.

 "We have taken initiatives to keep the markets of essential items stable throughout the year.

We will sit Thursday to analyse the price and supply situation of the commodities," he said.

Presently, both price and supply of various essential items in the capital city remain stable.

The situation will have to be kept at the tolerable level during Ramadan for the interest of the common people, he added.

In the meeting, necessary steps would be taken to stabilise the prices of sugar, edible oil, onion, dates and grams during Ramadan, he said.

Representatives from the ministry of agriculture, National board of revenue (NBR), Bangladesh Tariff commission (BTC), Bangladesh Bank (BB), Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) will attend the meeting.

Director General of WTO Cell and focal point of the "Review Of Commodities Prices And Forecast" cell of the MoC Amitava Chakraborty will chair the meeting.

The government will start selling key essential commodities at subsidised rate from June 02 to help keep prices and supplies stable during the holy month of Ramadan.

The state-owned TCB will sell the essential items in different parts of the country using 174 trucks. Of them, 25 will be used in Dhaka, 10 in Chittagong, five each in divisional cities and two each in 57 district towns.

According to the TCB, it will sell five types of commodities, notably sugar, soybean oil, lentil, gram and date.

Some 14 teams under the MoC are monitoring prices of essentials.
