The Power Division has urged the ministry of finance (MoF) to take necessary steps for payment of Tk 6.17 million outstanding bills of different offices of the ministry in the rural areas, officials said.
Palli Bidyut Samities (PBSs) of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) provides electricity connections to MoF offices across the country.  The BREB's associations are in a financial tight corner due to price differences between electricity purchase and sale.
Power division secretary Monowar Islam sent a letter recently to MoF secretary Fazle Kabir in this connection with payment of the arrears.
Accumulated outstanding electricity bill of different offices under the MoF stood at Tk 6.17 million until November 2013, the letter said.
The officials of Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) who failed to collect outstanding bills had to pay fines for failing to fulfill Performance Target Agreement. The imposition of such fines created adverse impact among officials, the power division letter mentioned.
The overall development of BREB is not possible due to a large number of outstanding bills from different government offices, sources said.
The BREB has been keeping effective contribution to the development of the country's agriculture, industry, socio-economy and education, they said. BREB was established in 1977 as a semi autonomous government organisation and has been providing service to rural member-consumers since then.
It is responsible for electrification of rural areas. As of today, there are 71 operating rural electricity co-operatives called Palli Bidyuit Samity (PBS), which offer about 10 million connections 562 sub-stations and 0.250 million km (250000 kilometre) distribution line.
