MoneyGram, DBS Bank launch SMS-based remittance

MoneyGram, a global innovative money transfer platform and payment services provider, announced that the Singapore customers of DBS, a leading financial services group in Asia, can transfer money to Bangladesh directly from their bank account via jolly app (SMS banking widget).

The service enables customers to send money anytime, anywhere with just a few clicks. Transfer can be picked up in cash from over 8,000 MoneyGram service centres across Bangladesh.

MoneyGram and DBS have joined hands to offer expatriate Bangladeshis a reliable platform for sending money directly to their families and get financially connected with them. With inauguration of the service, the joint commitment made by MoneyGram and DBS to provide digital, convenient money transfer options for the expatriates working in Singapore, has been fulfilled.

"We are delighted to partner with DBS to drive financial inclusion in the region," said Yogesh Sangle, MoneyGram's head of APAC, Middle East and South Asia region.

"The new digital channel enables us to reach a greater customer base with a simple solution that can be operated on a basic feature phone," Yogesh Sangle added.

The app can be operated using in five languages - Tamil, Bengali, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese and English, according to a press release of MoneyGram.

"Our partnership with MoneyGram will provide migrant communities greater connectivity to their families in their home countries," said P'ing Lim, Head of Deposits and Secured Lending, DBS Bank Singapore.

There are over 74,000 Bangladeshis in Singapore and the annual outflow of remittances from the Southeast Asian country to Bangladesh is estimated at US $192 million, according to the World Bank.
