The Ministry of Shipping (MoS) is going to sign a deal with a German company next week for purchasing a mobile harbour crane for the Mongla Port, officials said.
"We are going to sign a deal for buying a mobile harbour crane for the Mongla Port on Sunday," Mongla Port Authority (MPA) Chairman Commodore A K M Faruque Hassan told the FE.
The government has taken a set of development projects for gearing up import and export activities through the port. Under the moves, the deal will be signed for purchasing the crane.
The Mongla Port, which was previously known as Chalna Port, was founded in Bagerhat in 1950. It is now the second busiest seaport of the country.
Many international shipping companies have turned to Mongla as an alternative due to increasing congestion in the country's largest seaport in Chittagong.
The Mongla Port is considered as a gateway for the tourist ships travelling to two UNESCO World Heritage sites in the region - the Sundarbans and the mosque city of Bagerhat.
The port has 11 jetties and eight warehouses. It uses 12 swinging moorings in deeper sections of the connecting rivers.
