CHATTOGRAM May 02: Nagad has started disbursing the Prime Minister's financial assistance to more than 1.49 million (14.97 lakh) families who lost their sources of income to survive amid the current Covid-19 pandemic as Eid gift.

Each family listed by the government will receive an amount of Tk 2,500 at a time under the G2P programme.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday launched the programme through a video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban by sending financial assistance to 15 families of Chattogram, Bhola and Joypurhat districts.

During the first phase, postal department's mobile financial service (MFS) provider, Nagad, will disburse the sum from the fund to each family before Eid-ul-Fitre which will be observed in Bangladesh in mid-May.

The inaugural function was conducted online with participation of deputy commissioners of the three districts and the beneficiaries. Prime Minister's principal secretary (PM office) Ahmad Kaikaus hosted the event.

Besides Nagad, the Prime Minister is providing assistance to 33.39 lakh beneficiaries with the help of two other MFS providers in the current phase. Nagad will disburse 45 per cent of the total fund in this phase while the two other MFS providers will disburse the rest.

On Sunday, money was delivered to around 11,000 beneficiaries through their Nagad account.

Beneficiaries won't have to bear any additional cost including cash-out for receiving the assistance.

Nagad users will get the full cash-out sum which is Tk 37.35.

A total of Tk 2,537.35 was given to each account of the Nagad account-holding beneficiary. In the case of the account holders of the two other MFS providers, the government paid Tk 15 to each beneficiary as cash-out cost.

Nagad Managing Director Tanvir A. Mishuk said the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has stood beside the people who lost their livelihood amid the Covid-19 pandemic while the other countries' heads of state or government in the world have been mobilising their funds to assist the top taxpayers.

In Bangladesh, this was possible because of the farsightedness of the Prime Minister. Moreover, due to her interest to attach importance to digital services, the beneficiaries are getting the government assistance on their mobile phones at home, he said.

Mr Mishuk assured that the sum will be delivered to all beneficiaries maintaining the list provided by the government in the most transparent manner.

The number of Nagad users crossed 41 million (4.10 crore) last month and the daily transaction crossed to Tk 4.0 billion.
