The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday observed the National VAT Day-2018 with a call for building awareness among the people about payment of VAT and tax.
On the occasion of the National VAT Day and VAT Week, the revenue board brought out a colourful procession. The board employees along with VAT-payers took part in the procession.
NBR chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan inaugurated the VAT Day and VAT Week at its Segunbagicha headquarters.
Speaking on the occasion, the NBR chief urged its officials to be careful enough so that businessmen don't face any harassment while paying their VAT.
He also emphasised the importance of collecting VAT from businessmen as per the rules to ensure transparency in VAT collection.
If businessmen properly deposit VAT, collected from people, with the government exchequer, the amount of tax would go up significantly, he observed.
He also pointed out that the switch from the existing manual system to automation could provide the real picture of VAT collection.
Actor Ferdous, actor Afzal Hossain and NBR official Ziauddin Mahmud, among others, were present at the event.
To mark the VAT Week, elaborate programmes were drawn up in order to raise the volume of VAT and tax for the country's development.
A view-exchange meeting and an award-giving ceremony were also held later on the occasion. Finance Minister AMA Muhith attended the ceremony as the chief guest.
The NBR honoured a total of 144 top VAT-payers at national and district level.
The revenue board has been observing the National VAT Week-2018 across the country since December 10.
