Ctg port ranks 70th among 100 top ports
The Parliamentary standing committee on shipping ministry at its first meeting revealed on Wednesday that the Chittagong port has been ranked as the 70th busiest container port in the world among the top 100 seaports in the world. The meeting was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee chairman Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam in the chair. The meeting also discussed on the programmes of Chattogram Port Authority, Mongla Port Authority, Pyra Port Authority, Land Port Authority, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) and the Department of Shipping. The meeting was also informed that if the capital dredging project in the Pashur channel is implemented, Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited will be able to carry nearly 45 lakh tonnes of coal without any hassle. Committee members State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Shajahan Khan M Majharul Haq Prodhan, Ranjit Kumar Roy, Mahfuzur Rahman, M Abdul Latif, Dr Shamil Uddin Ahmed Shimul, M Aslam Hossen Sawdagar and SM Shahjada, among others, took part in the meeting.

Port condition vital for FSRU in BD: experts
Global experts said on Wednesday that port for Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) in Bangladesh is important as the country has already introduced offshore FSRU. Talking about onshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Bangladesh, Hideo Hasegawa, general manager of New Business Promotion Officer, Japex, said Bangladesh government has introduced offshore FSRU, which needed port having good facility for supplying LNG to pipelines. "Optimization of supply and demand system is another important criterion for smooth supply of LNG," he pointed out while responding to a query about LNG supply and demand globally, especially in Bangladesh, at Hilton Hotel in Tokyo. Experts said the usages of LNG have been dramatically changed in the last 10 years as many countries introduced FSRU and installed gas pipelines for LNG supply aimed at ensuring energy security.
