Finance Minister AMA Muhith, instead of making any fresh allocation for combating the impacts of climate change, on Thursday proposed to cut its spending for the same in the future.
The minister in his budget speech said initiatives will be taken to evaluate and update the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan, 2009 on the basis of the country's needs.
"To implement the Action Plan, we allocated Tk 25.55 billion in the last five fiscal years. However, this allocation will be reduced in future and instead steps will be taken to increase the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF) established with the assistance of our development partners," he said.
The development partners have already provided a total amount of US$186.9 million in the BCCRF fund.
He said the government has started working on the implementation of the Roadmap for National Adaptation Plan as well as the Roadmap for Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action, NAMA.
The minister said a Climate Fiscal Framework to ensure transparency and accountability in climate change related public spending has been formulated.
