No more licensing MLM companies, JS body decides

A parliamentary panel Tuesday recommended that the government should not issue any fresh licence for the launch of anymore multi-level marketing company at the moment, as some MLM outfits created a crisis through confidence tricks.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce Ministry also asked for a detailed report on the activities of the newly approved five MLM companies. The report has to be placed in the next meeting.

The committee made the suggestions at its 7th meeting at the parliament building with committee chairman and opposition party chief whip Tajul Islam Chowdhury in the chair.

Among the committee members attending the meeting were Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Motahar Hossain, Nurul Majid, Mahmud Humayun, Waresat Hossain Belal, AKM Bahauddin, Sanwar Hossain, Monjurul Islam and Laila Arjuman Banu.

The committee discussed the progress in implementation of the decisions taken in the 6th meeting.

The committee asked the ministry to submit a report on the upcoming Dhaka International Trade Fair 2015 in the next meeting.

It also suggested moving forward the initiative to set up border haats on the Bangladesh-India frontier with "stronger monitoring from the local administration to ensure all the facilities".  

The meeting was informed about the latest state of export-oriented apparel industry, after a crisis having stemmed from some accidents.         

"Foreign investors' interest to invest in garment sector has increased due to the positive inspection reports on the Bangladeshi garment industry by various foreign organizations," it was stated.

The country has exported a record $30186.62 million garment items in FY 2013-14, up 11.69 per cent from previous year's mark.
