Normal sales are yet to resume in some important markets of the capital even a week after Eid-ul-Fitr, market operators have said.

According to them, it will take some more days for resumption of normal sales in their shops as Dhaka city is still in a holiday mood and people have not yet started coming to the markets.

Business circles do not expect resumption of sales in various shops and malls before next 10 to 15 days.

During a visit to some important markets of the city including Bashundhara City, Elephant Road, New Market, Baily Road and Aziz Super Market of the capital, the FE correspondent found very few customers in most of the outlets. Many shopkeepers were seen passing idle time, chatting with other traders and reading newspapers.

Some traders told the FE that on some days, they could not find even a single customer. But they are optimistic of return of normalcy next week.

Mohammad Al Amin, owner of Luni Univers, a fashion outlet of Bashundhara City told the FE that he opened his shop last Wednesday and since then he found only four to five customers.

"Every year after Eid, we have to face this situation. Most of the people are coming back to the city or have just arrived. Another important reason is that after spending huge money and buying most of the necessary stuffs on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, customers will surely wait in the rest of the month to get cash in their pockets for necessary purchase. However, we hope, within next 10 to 15 days, normal sales will resume," Al Amin said.

Saidul Islam, senior salesman of Peers Fashion, also from Bashundhara City said, Friday is the third day of their opening after Eid vacation. On the first day, they could not even sell a single product.  Up to Friday, their total sales stood at only Tk 6,000.

Mohammad Ali, Showroom Manager of the Ecstasy of Elephant Road branch, said they have also been witnessing very sluggish sales since the opening of the shop after Eid vacation. On the first day of opening on Monday, they could find only two customers.
