Online shopping thrives at DITF

Online trading at the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) is getting popular thanks to the people's busy urban lifestyle and the increasing online accessibility.

The products including textile and garments, leather and leather goods, footwear, furniture, kitchenware, bikes, electronic goods, jewelry and cosmetics are being sold online.

At the DITF more than 40 online social media pages such as facebook and tweeter are playing a vital role in the online trading or e-commerce.

Insiders said about 70 per cent online sales were being made with the help of facebook as the e-commerce thrived at the DITF and most of the traders aged about 20-30 years were shopping online.

"A large number of younger people are interested in online shopping at the DITF to save their time and avoid traffic jam," SM Mahbubor Rahaman, director general of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), told the FE.

He said a number of e-commerce companies were presenting a large number of products on their web portals at the DITF.

He said the customers could choose any product online and were able to make payments using their credit cards, debit cards and bank accounts.

The "Amar Desh Amar Gram", an e-shop at the DITF were found displaying a number of local products, especially electronics, traditional Jamdani products, jute and jute goods, leather and leather goods, export-oriented Readymade Garments (RMG), furniture and handcrafts and was also taking orders from several destinations in the country.

Nurur Rahman Khan, chairman of Amar Desh Amar Gram, said they had been participating in the DITF for the last three years. In the current year they were getting good response from the customers.

Shameem Ahsan, president of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), said most of the younger customers were opting for online shopping as they get a good number of collections at a single place.

He said for online shoppers the prices were reasonable and the delivery charge was minimum.

He said most of the customers were not having enough time. So they were shopping online at the DITF to save time and avoid traffic jams.

According to BASIS, there are more than 1500 online trading platforms including akhoni.com, shurjomukhi limited, Oscom, Rokomari.com, Amar Desh Amar Gram, AjkerDeal.com, Webshohor, at2clicks.com, Biponee.com, sholoana.com, BD Com Online Ltd, Bijoy Online Limited, ARK Trade Service, Aggi Systems Ltd.
