Pakistani millers urge BD to release consignments

Pakistani millers have requested Bangladesh government to immediately release jute consignments, for which letters of credit (LCs) were opened before the recently-imposed ban on raw jute export, officials said.

Pakistan Jute Mills Association (PJMA) has recently urged the government to settle the issue through Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA), and the letter written in this regard has been sent to the ministries concerned to take necessary steps.

Earlier, the government imposed a month-long ban on raw jute export for proper implementation of the Mandatory Use of Jute Product Labeling Law 2010.

The ban has been slapped to increase supply of the 'golden fibre' to local jute bag and sack-makers. Ministry of Textile and Jute (MoTJ) took the decision on November 1 under sections 4 and 13 of the Jute Ordinance 1962, said an official.

The PJMA letter mentioned that the raw jute consignments, which are on the verge of export and for which LCs have already been opened before enactment of the ban, have also fallen prey to the decision."The government of Bangladesh should honour export commitments to Pakistan, particularly the consignments for which L/Cs have already been established in favour of Bangladeshi exporters by Pakistani importers of raw jute."

PJMA expressed its deep concern over the ban imposed by Bangladesh on export of raw jute from November 3, according to the letter.

"The ban on raw jute export has come without any forewarning. The jolt thus received will have drastic impact upon our industry, pushing it into deep and non-recoverable crises."

All stakeholders including food departments of all provinces and Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Supply Corporation (PASSCO) etc will face serious difficulties due to non-availability of jute sacks.
